About Us
General Shafter School was founded in 1904 on land donated by the Kern County Land Company. It was named for General William R. Shafter, a Spanish-American War Veteran who lived nearby. The original enrollment was 10 students. Today, it serves approximately 200 students, kindergarten through eighth grade. In 2004, the district celebrated its centennial. In 2006-07, the students and staff were moved to a new site 1/2 mile west on Shafter Road to a new site donated by the Peter Delis family. This site provides room to grow as the development in the Bakersfield area moves closer to us. Planning and building continues in an on-going process.
